Choosing the right transmission fluid is critical for your Land Cruiser - use the wrong type and you risk serious transmission damage. Here's what you need to know about your J250's ATF requirements.

Specification Details

Fluid Type - Toyota Genuine ATF WS

This is a TOYOTA-SPECIFIC requirement. ATF WS is not interchangeable with other transmission fluids:

  • Using Dexron or other ATF types will damage the transmission
  • This specification is printed in your vehicle's owner's manual as the requirement
  • The fluid type is critical to transmission warranty coverage

Fluid Capacity - 13.2 Quarts (12.5 Liters)

The 13.2 quart (12.5 liter, 11.0 imperial quart) figure is a reference specification:

  • This is the total fluid capacity of your transmission
  • For actual fluid replacement, contact your Toyota dealer
  • Overfilling or underfilling affects transmission performance and cooling efficiency

Transmission Temperature Protection System

Your 2024+ Land Cruiser has a protective system that monitors transmission fluid temperature. It's important to understand how this works - it can help you avoid serious transmission damage.

How the Protection System Works

If the tires spin continually when the vehicle becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow, or if the accelerator pedal is depressed and released repeatedly while driving, the automatic transmission temperature may become too high and the automatic transmission may be damaged.

To avoid damaging the automatic transmission, the system may temporarily lock the gear. If the automatic transmission temperature falls, the gear locking is canceled and the automatic transmission is returned to normal operation.

Temperature Warning Message

If the automatic transmission fluid temperature is high, the following message will display on your multi-information display:

"Transmission Oil Temp. High Stop in a Safe Place and See Owner's Manual"

When this warning appears:

  1. Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place
  2. Shift the shift lever to P (Park)
  3. Wait until the warning message clears
  4. If the warning message goes off, you may start the vehicle again
  5. If the warning message does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer

Driving Safety - Slippery Road Surfaces

WARNING: When driving on slippery road surfaces

Do not accelerate or shift gears suddenly. Sudden changes in engine braking may cause the vehicle to spin or skid, resulting in an accident.

Why ATF WS Matters for Your J250

The 2024+ Land Cruiser J250 uses an 8-speed automatic transmission paired with the 2.4L turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This combination generates 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, placing significant demands on the transmission system.

Toyota Genuine ATF WS is engineered specifically for:

  • Hybrid powertrains: The transmission manages both gas engine and electric motor power delivery
  • Turbo compatibility: Higher oil film strength for the extra pressure from turbocharging
  • Temperature stability: Maintains viscosity across the wide temperature range of a hybrid system
  • Shift quality: Ensures smooth, precise shifts in the 8-speed transmission

The Critical Warning is Not a Suggestion

Using non-approved transmission fluid is one of the fastest ways to damage an automatic transmission and void your warranty. The NOTICE in your owner's manual is a warranty and reliability statement.

What Makes ATF WS Different

  • Approved for: Toyota automatic transmissions including hybrid variants
  • NOT approved for: Dexron-based fluids, competing brand ATFs, or older Toyota specifications
  • Density: Lighter viscosity than older ATF specifications, optimized for fuel economy
  • Additive package: Friction modifiers and anti-wear agents specific to Toyota's transmission designs

Symptoms of Using Wrong Fluid

The J250 Land Cruiser's transmission will show specific symptoms if non-approved fluid is used:

  • Early symptom: Rough shifts, jerky engagement
  • Progressive symptoms: Whining or grinding noises during acceleration
  • Critical failure: Complete transmission failure requiring costly replacement

Recommended Products

For fluid replacement and maintenance supplies:

  • Toyota Genuine ATF WS Transmission Fluid
  • Transmission fluid drain pan
  • Transmission fluid pump or funnel tool
