Camera Washer Operation, Maintenance, Lens Care, Troubleshooting

Safety Precautions

Washer Fluid Freezing
In cold weather, the fluid can freeze on the windshield and cause low visibility (a serious safety issue). Wait until your windshield is warm before using the washer.

Nozzle Care
When a nozzle becomes blocked, in this case, contact your Toyota dealer. Do not try to clear it with a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged.

Battery Discharge Prevention
Do not leave the wiper on longer than necessary when the hybrid system is off.

Empty Washer Fluid Tank
When the washer fluid tank is empty, do not operate the switch continually, or the washer fluid pump will overheat.

Visibility During Camera Cleaning
When cleaning the camera, it may be difficult to see the image due to the washer fluid. When backing up, be sure to visually check all around the vehicle both directly and using the mirrors before proceeding.

Washer Fluid Residue on Lens at Night
If washer fluid remains on the camera lens surface after cleaning, the image can be difficult to see at night due to the height or inclination of the headlights of the vehicle behind.

Temperature Protection
Do not pour hot water on the vehicle in cold weather or apply other rapid changes of temperature.

High-Pressure Washer Caution
If you wash the vehicle with a high pressure car washer, do not point the hose directly at the camera or camera area. Applying strong water pressure may result in the camera malfunctioning.

Camera Impact Damage
If the camera is hit, it may cause a camera malfunction. If this happens, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

Camera Care Details
  • Do not hit or apply a forceful impact on the camera. Doing so may change the position and mounting angle of the camera.
  • The camera is designed to be waterproof. Do not detach, disassemble, or modify it.
  • When washing the camera lens, splash the camera with a large amount of water and then wipe the camera lens clean with a soft, damp cloth. Rubbing the camera lens forcibly may scratch the camera lens and you may no longer be able to see images clearly.
  • The camera cover is made of resin. Do not allow an organic solvent, car wax, window cleaner, or glass coating to adhere to the camera. If this happens, wipe it off immediately.

Ice and Snow Limitations
Washer fluid is sprayed onto the camera lens surface. Therefore, the ice, snow, etc. adhering around the camera cannot be removed.

Operating the Camera Washer System

Which Cameras Are Cleaned

The camera washer automatically cleans:
  • Rear View Monitor (if equipped)
  • Multi-Terrain Monitor (if equipped)

How to Activate the Camera Washer

Here's how to activate the camera washer: Push the rear window wiper/washer lever. The washer will automatically operate and clean your cameras.

The wiper lever operates the rear window wiper as follows:
  • Position 1: Off
  • Position 2: Intermittent operation
  • Position 3: Normal operation

Operating Conditions

The rear window wiper and washer can be operated when all of the following conditions are met:
  • The power switch is in ON
  • The glass hatch is closed

Important Operation Notes
  • When the washer is operated, the wipers will operate one more time after a short delay to prevent dripping from the rear window and camera lens.
  • When the rear window wiper is operating, if the back door is opened while the vehicle is stopped, operation of the rear window wiper will be stopped to prevent anyone near the vehicle from being sprayed by water.
  • When the shift lever is shifted to R when the front wipers are operating, the rear window wiper will operate once.

Intelligent Assistant Operation

If equipped, you can operate the rear window washer using the Intelligent Assistant system (available when the vehicle is stopped):
  • Operating the rear window wiper only once
  • Operating the rear window washer (when the vehicle is stopped)

Camera Lens Cleaning Procedure

When Cleaning Is Needed

If dirt or foreign matter (such as water droplets, snow, or mud) has stuck to any of your vehicle's cameras, you will not be able to see the image clearly.

Automatic Cleaning with Washer Fluid

Dirt on the rear camera lens can be cleaned by operating the dedicated camera cleaning washer. Simply activate the system as described above. The washer fluid will spray on the lens and the wiper will remove excess moisture.

Manual Cleaning (If Needed)

If the automatic washer system is not sufficient or if residual dirt remains:

  1. Splash the camera with a large amount of water
  2. Wipe the camera lens clean with a soft, damp cloth
  3. Use light pressure only - avoid rubbing forcefully

Important Cleaning Notes
  • Some foreign matter won't be removed completely after cleaning. In this case, rinse the rear camera lens with a large quantity of water and then wipe it clean with a soft cloth dampened with water.
  • Do not strongly rub the rear camera lens, as it may be scratched and will not be able to transmit a clear image.

Real-World Tips & Context

Community Best Practices

Keep Washer Fluid Reservoir Topped Up

The camera washer system shares fluid with the rear window washer. A full reservoir ensures both systems function optimally. Check before off-road or muddy driving conditions, particularly if you frequently use either system.

Apply Hydrophobic Coating Before Winter

Hydrophobic coating causes water to bead up and roll off the lens, preventing water accumulation in cold, wet conditions. Apply before winter season arrives. This makes manual cleaning less frequent during winter months.

Weekly Microfiber Cloth Cleaning During High-Use Periods

One quick wipe per week prevents buildup that leads to cloudy images, especially important after driving through dirty or muddy conditions. Use only soft microfiber cloth; avoid paper towels or rough fabrics.

Use Soft Brush or Compressed Air First

Remove loose dirt and debris before wiping with cloth. This prevents loose particles from scratching the lens during wiping, particularly important after muddy or dusty driving.

Increase Cleaning Frequency in Winter Road Conditions

Messy winter roads (salt, slush, mud) increase lens contamination. Wipe lens after each drive during winter in harsh road conditions to maintain visibility and safety.

Understanding Camera Washer Activation

The camera washer requires manual activation via the rear window wiper/washer lever (it is not automatic). The icon appears when you put the vehicle in reverse, but you must push the lever to activate the washer.

New Vehicle Priming (J250 First Use)

New J250 models arrive with empty washer lines. The system must be primed before the camera washer will function. Use the rear window washer a few times. After 3-4 uses of the rear washer, the camera washer will begin functioning properly.

System Architecture: Shared Washer Fluid

The J250 Land Cruiser camera washer and rear window washer share the same fluid and pump system. This is efficient but means high usage of either system depletes the reservoir faster. Keep washer fluid level higher than you might for a non-camera vehicle.

Common Questions & Troubleshooting

No Washer Spray Coming Out

If no washer fluid sprays from the nozzle when you operate the switch:
  • Verify that washer fluid remains in the washer fluid reservoir
  • Check that the washer nozzle is not blocked by debris
  • If washer fluid is present but nozzle appears blocked, contact your Toyota dealer

Nozzle May Be Misaligned

Similar to windshield washer nozzles, camera washer nozzles can shift or misalign over time. If spray pattern becomes ineffective, nozzle may need realignment (dealer service). Do not assume the nozzle is blocked; it may just be misaligned.

Winter Visibility Challenges

Cold temperatures and road salt/slush increase lens contamination frequency. Washer fluid residue on lens surface is more visible at night due to oncoming headlights. Plan for more frequent cleaning in winter road conditions. Consider hydrophobic coating for winter climates.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spraying Liquid Directly on Camera: Can damage internal camera components or get into seals. Apply isopropyl alcohol or lens cleaner to cloth, then wipe.
  • Assuming Automatic Operation: Manual activation is required. Push the lever in reverse to activate.
  • Expecting Immediate Function on New Vehicle: System must be primed. Use rear washer several times first.
  • Neglecting Camera Lens After Dirty Driving: Accumulation degrades image quality and reduces reverse visibility. Follow up with manual cleaning if needed.

Maintenance and Care

Routine Maintenance

Maintain the correct washer fluid level in your vehicle's washer fluid reservoir. When the washer fluid tank is empty, do not operate the switch continually, or the washer fluid pump will overheat.

Temperature Considerations

In cold weather, avoid sudden temperature changes to your vehicle, as this can affect camera functionality. Do not pour hot water on the vehicle in cold weather or apply other rapid changes of temperature.

High-Pressure Cleaning

When washing your vehicle at home or at a car wash, never direct high-pressure water at the camera or surrounding area. Applying strong water pressure may result in the camera malfunctioning.

Camera Protection

Avoid striking the camera area with objects, as this can cause misalignment or internal damage. If the camera is hit, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

Chemical Protection

The camera cover is made of resin. Do not allow the following substances to adhere to the camera:
  • Organic solvents
  • Car wax
  • Window cleaner
  • Glass coating

If any of these substances contact the camera, wipe it off immediately.

Recommended Maintenance Products

  • Hydrophobic Lens Coating - Apply before winter season. Helps prevent water and salt accumulation on camera lens.
  • Microfiber Lens Cleaning Cloth Set - Use only microfiber cloth for camera lens cleaning. Keep a set in your vehicle.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol or Optical Lens Cleaner - Apply to microfiber cloth (never spray directly on camera). Isopropyl alcohol 91% or higher works well for lens cleaning and dries quickly without water marks or streaking. (70% concentrations leave visible water marks.)
