Flat tire? Whether you're on the highway or stranded in the backcountry, here's how to change it safely on your Land Cruiser. (Reference: Owner's Manual, pg. 607-610)

Official Manual Information

Safety Precautions

Thermal Hazard: The disc wheels and brakes are extremely hot immediately after driving. Don't touch them. You can get serious burns. Let the vehicle cool before you start changing a tire.

Critical Procedure Requirements:
  • Lower the spare tire completely to the ground before removing it from under the vehicle.
  • Do not try to remove the wheel ornament by hand. Be careful when handling the ornament to avoid injury.
  • Skip these and you risk the wheel nuts loosening and the tire falling off. That's a serious safety hazard.

Torque Verification: After replacing a tire, check the tightening torque as soon as possible. Wheel nut torque: 97 ft•lbf (131 N•m, 13.4 kgf•m)

Component Specifications:

  • When installing a tire, only use wheel nuts that have been specifically designed for that wheel.
  • If there are any cracks or deformations in the bolt screws, nut threads or bolt holes of the wheel, get it checked at a professional shop before driving.

Wheel Contact Surface: If foreign matter is on the wheel contact surface, the wheel nuts may loosen while the vehicle is in motion, causing the tire to come off.

Wheel Ornament: Do not attach a heavily damaged wheel ornament, as it may fly off the wheel while the vehicle is moving.

Nut Orientation: When installing the wheel nuts, be sure to install them with the tapered ends facing inward.

J250-Specific (Power Back Door): Replacing a flat tire for vehicles with power back door: make sure to cancel the power back door system (page 145 of manual). Failure to do so may cause the back door to operate unintentionally if the power back door switch is accidentally touched, resulting in hands and fingers being caught and injured.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Tools & Equipment Required:
  • Jack handle and extensions (provided in tool kit)
  • Wheel nut wrench (provided in tool kit)
  • Wheel ornament remover/pry tool (provided in tool kit)
  • Spare tire (mounted under vehicle)

PHASE 1: PREPARATION & SPARE TIRE EXTRACTION

  1. Assemble Tools - Remove the jack handle bar, jack handle extension bar, and wheel nut wrench from the tool bag and assemble by following the assembly diagram on page 607. The jack handle extensions connect to create full extension length.
  2. Prepare Vehicle Protection - Place a rag under the jack handle to protect the rear bumper from damage during lowering operations.
  3. Access Spare Tire - Insert the jack handle into the lowering screw (spare tire storage mechanism under vehicle). Turn handle using the marked positions: Lower (position 1) or Raise (position 2).
  4. Lower Spare Tire to Ground - Lower the spare tire completely to the ground before attempting removal from under the vehicle. This is a critical safety step.
  5. Extract Spare Tire - Pull out the spare tire and remove the holding bracket that secured it to the vehicle.
  6. Remove Wheel Cover - Remove the spare wheel cover (plastic cover that protects the spare tire's appearance during storage).

PHASE 2: VEHICLE POSITIONING & PREPARATION

  1. Chock the Tires - Place wheel chocks (blocks or wedges) behind the tires to prevent vehicle movement. Use these diagonal positions:

If flat tire is at:Place chocks at:
    Front leftBehind the rear right
    Front rightBehind the rear left
Rear leftIn front of the front right
Rear rightIn front of the front left

Safety principle: Opposite corner chocking provides maximum stability.
  2. Remove Wheel Ornament - Pry off the wheel ornament (hub cap) using the beveled end of the wheel ornament remover tool. This provides access to the wheel nuts underneath.
  3. Pre-Loosen Wheel Nuts - Slightly loosen each wheel nut by approximately one full turn BEFORE jacking the vehicle. This is critical. The vehicle weight helps hold the wheel steady while you break the nut seal. Do not remove nuts completely yet.
  4. Assemble Jack Components - Assemble the jack handle end, jack handle extensions, and wheel nut wrench (if separate components). Reference the assembly diagram on page 608.
  5. Position Jack at Jack Points - Position the jack at the designated jack points as shown on the diagram. The jack points are reinforced areas on the vehicle frame designed to safely support the vehicle weight. Use only these marked points—using other areas can damage the vehicle.

PHASE 3: WHEEL REMOVAL & SAFETY

  1. Raise Vehicle - Raise the vehicle using the jack until the flat tire is slightly raised off the ground. Do not raise excessively.
  2. Remove Wheel Nuts and Tire - Remove all the wheel nuts. When resting the tire on the ground after removal, place the tire so that the wheel design faces up to avoid scratching the wheel surface.

PHASE 4: INSTALLATION & COMPLETION

  1. Prepare Wheel Contact Surface - Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the wheel contact surface of both the vehicle hub and the spare wheel. Clean contact surfaces prevent wheel nut loosening during operation.
  2. Install Spare Tire - Install the spare tire and loosely tighten each wheel nut by hand by approximately the same amount.

For aluminum wheels: Turn the wheel nuts until the washers come into contact with the disc wheel. This prevents wheel surface damage from excessive nut pressure.
  3. Lower Vehicle - Lower the vehicle using the jack until the tire is fully seated on the ground.
  4. Secure Wheel Nuts - Securely tighten the wheel nuts two or three times in the crisscross pattern shown in the illustration using the wheel nut wrench.

    Torque Specification: 97 ft•lbf (131 N•m, 13.4 kgf•m)
  5. Reinstall Wheel Ornament - Reinstall the wheel ornament (hub cap). The center wheel ornament may need separate installation. Ensure the ornament is seated properly and undamaged.

Critical Specifications

Wheel Nut Torque: 97 ft•lbf (131 N•m, 13.4 kgf•m)

This specification must be verified with a torque wrench as soon as possible after tire change. Failure to maintain proper torque can cause wheel nut loosening and tire loss. Use only wheel nuts specifically designed for your wheel type.

Aluminum Wheel Detail: When replacing an aluminum wheel with an aluminum wheel, the washers must contact the disc wheel evenly to prevent wheel damage. This detail is visible in the page 610 installation diagram.

Tire Repair Tips, Off-Road Tire Care, J250 Maintenance, Puncture Prevention

Community Best Practices

The Land Cruiser community has refined tire change procedures through extensive off-road and highway experience. Consider these verified practices:

Tire Maintenance Best Practices

  • Rotation Schedule: Rotate tires every 6,000–8,000 miles to promote even wear. Regular rotation extends tire life and maintains handling characteristics.
  • Monthly Pressure Checks: Check inflation monthly; underinflation leads to overheating and blowouts. Many flat tire incidents on the trail happen to underinflated tires.
  • Tread Depth Monitoring: Inspect tread depth regularly and replace when below 4/32" for wet weather safety. Thin tires are more susceptible to punctures from sharp objects on trails.
  • Post-Installation Alignment: Align your vehicle after installing new tires or suspension work to prevent edge wear. This is especially important if you've upgraded to larger tires.

Off-Road Tire Pressure Strategy

When driving on forest service roads, experienced J250 owners air down to 20-25 psi (versus standard highway pressures) to get better comfort and reduce the risk of tire damage. This is a preventative measure used to minimize flat tire occurrence before it happens, rather than a repair strategy.

Tire Repair Kit Proficiency

If you're planning off-road travel beyond cell service, practice repairing a tire with your repair kit at home before relying on it in the field. Plugging tires in darkness, mud, and rain on the roadside is much more difficult than at home. Hands-on familiarity increases reliability of repairs when you need them most.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mismatched Tire Installation:
If you're running aftermarket tires of different sizes than your spare, never put mismatched tires on the front wheels. If a flat occurs on the front, move one of the rear tires to the front and place the mismatched spare tire on the rear. Front tire consistency is critical for steering precision and vehicle stability.

Low-Quality Repair Kits: Avoid cheap auto-parts-store tire plug kits for serious off-road use. Plugging requires significant force, and plastic-handled tools are unsafe and unreliable. Quality kits with metal handles (from manufacturers like Overland Vehicle Systems or ARB) increase your success rate when repairs are needed.

Tire Pressure Mistakes During Off-Road Travel: Flat tire risk increases significantly in these conditions:
  • Just after forest service road grading (gravel sharp)
  • During high-speed tire spinning or aggressive driving
  • When tires are overinflated with no air-down buffer

Prepare for trail conditions by checking tire condition, pressure, and repair kit readiness before you leave pavement.
