2024+ Land Cruiser J250 Winter Tires & Tire Chains - Selection & Maintenance Guide

Safety Precautions

WARNING: Driving with Snow Tires

Snow tires work because of three critical factors: right size, proper pressure, and safe speed. Each one directly affects control. Here's what matters:

  • Use tires of the specified size.
  • Maintain the recommended level of air pressure.
  • Do not drive in excess of 75 mph (120 km/h), regardless of the type of snow tires being used.
  • Use snow tires on all, not just some wheels.

WARNING: Driving with Tire Chains (Vehicles Without 265/70R18 and 265/60R20 Tires)

Tire chains require specific handling because they reduce suspension travel and steering feedback. Here's what keeps you safe:

  • Do not drive in excess of the speed limit specified for the tire chains being used, or 30 mph (50 km/h), whichever is lower.
  • Avoid driving on bumpy road surfaces or over potholes.
  • Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shifting operations that cause sudden engine braking.
  • Slow down sufficiently before entering a curve to ensure that vehicle control is maintained.
  • Do not use LTA (Lane Tracing Assist) system.
  • Do not use LDA (Lane Departure Alert) system.

NOTICE: Fitting Tire Chains

Note: Tire chains can interfere with your tire pressure monitoring, so manual checks become more important.

Pre-Winter Preparations

Before driving in winter conditions, carry out the following preparations and inspections:

  • Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside temperatures: Engine oil, Engine coolant, Washer fluid
  • Have a service technician inspect the condition of the 12-volt battery
  • If the vehicle is left parked with the brakes damp in cold temperatures, there is a possibility of the brakes freezing. Confirm shift lever cannot be moved out of P.

Winter Tire Options: Snow Tires vs. Tire Chains

The J250 Land Cruiser gives you two winter traction options, but your choice depends on your vehicle's tire size.

Option 1: Snow Tires (All Vehicles)

What You Need:

  • Four snow tires (full set on all four wheels)
  • Tires must be the same size and brand
  • Tires must be of the specified size for your vehicle

Snow Tire Requirements:
  • Use tires of the specified size
  • Maintain the recommended level of air pressure (check monthly; cold reduces air pressure significantly)
  • Do not drive in excess of 75 mph (120 km/h)
  • Use snow tires on all wheels, not partial installation

Why Snow Tires?

Snow tires provide better traction and braking performance in winter conditions compared to all-season tires. They feature specialized rubber compounds that remain flexible at lower temperatures and tread patterns designed for snow, providing critical safety advantages on winter roads.

Option 2: Tire Chains (Selected Vehicles Only)

Critical Compatibility Note:

Tire chains cannot be mounted on vehicles with the following tire sizes:
  • 265/70R18
  • 265/60R20

If your J250 Land Cruiser is equipped with these tire sizes, snow tires are your only winter option. For vehicles with other tire sizes, chains provide an alternative to snow tires.

Tire Chain Specifications

Use the correct tire chain size when mounting snow chains. Chain size is regulated for each tire size.

ComponentDiameterWidthLength
Side Chain0.20 in. (5 mm)0.71 in. (18 mm)1.81 in. (46 mm)
Cross Chain0.25 in. (6.3 mm)0.89 in. (22.6 mm)1.50 in. (38.1 mm)

Important Compatibility Details:

Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that chains match the size of the tires. Using incorrect chain sizes can damage your tires and suspension, and may cause loss of vehicle control.

Tire Chain Installation

Follow these critical precautions when installing and removing chains:

Safety First:
  • Install and remove tire chains in a safe location away from traffic
  • Install tire chains on the rear tires only. Do not install tire chains on the front tires.

Installation Procedure:
  • Install tire chains on rear tires as tightly as possible
  • Retighten chains after driving 1/4 - 1/2 mile (0.5 - 1.0 km)
  • Install tire chains following the instructions provided with the tire chains

Regulations:

Regulations regarding the use of tire chains vary depending on location and type of road. Always check local regulations before installing chains.

Real-World Tips & Context

Community Best Practices

Winter Tires Outperform in Most Situations

Winter tires and tire socks outperform low-profile clearance chains in most situations. Winter tires have specialized rubber compounds that remain flexible at low temperatures, providing better traction than all-season or all-terrain tires on snow and ice.

Snow Socks as an Alternative

Snow socks are an easy-to-install legal alternative to chains, though they generally last only a few winters with regular use. For J250 owners with incompatible tire sizes who want a lighter-duty option than dedicated snow tires, socks can provide emergency winter capability.

Proper Chain Installation Technique

Straighten chains on the ground before installation. Drape over the tire top, even side-to-side, then clip inside hooks first, then outside hooks. This prevents twisted chains that won't seat properly, reducing traction and potentially causing suspension damage.

Don't Over-Use Locking Differentials on Plowed Roads

With the J250's full-time four-wheel drive and locking diffs, you can accelerate faster than you can stop. There's no need for locking center diff or axle diffs on plowed roads. Locking can actually make the situation worse. Lock only on unplowed roads and when going up slopes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't Rely on All-Terrain Tires for Snow/Ice

All-terrain tires have wide, deep threads that reduce rubber-to-surface contact on ice or compacted snow. Ice requires maximum rubber contact and fine sipes (cuts) to grip the surface. AT tires cannot provide this performance on snow and ice, resulting in "pretty bad" traction compared to dedicated winter tires. Significantly reduced braking and traction are the real-world impacts of this mistake.

Forgetting the J250's Weight and Momentum

The J250 weighs approximately 3 tons, which means longer stopping distances on snow and ice, even with winter tires. Owners note that "it takes time to stop" even in low-grip conditions. Driving winter speeds appropriate for lighter vehicles creates accident risk when the truck's mass and momentum aren't considered.

Rushing Cold Weather Engine Starts

In extreme cold (-20°F or below), the LC's hybrid system may struggle. The engine turns over but the electrical system may go dead before ignition. Having a jumper pack available and allowing longer startup sequences in extreme cold prevents stranded vehicles in remote winter conditions.

Driving Aggressively with Winter Tires

Even winter tires have grip limits that increase dramatically with speed. At 75 mph on snow, traction is marginal; above that speed, loss of control becomes likely.

Helpful Context

Dedicated Winter Tires vs. Stock Soft Compound

Stock OEM tires have a relatively soft compound that may be adequate for light snow, but they will never compare to a dedicated winter tire on snow and ice. The rubber chemistry and tread design are fundamentally different. Winter tires maintain flexibility at temperatures where standard tires harden, providing critical braking and cornering advantages.

Tire Sizing and Performance Trade-offs

Stock 265/70R18 tires are approximately 32.6 inches. Some owners size up to 275/70R18 for added clearance and height, but this comes with minor speedometer error and potential suspension interaction. Stick with OEM size for winter tire purchases unless you've verified compatibility.

Cold Weather Brake Risk

If the J250 is left parked with damp brakes in cold temperatures, there is a possibility of brake freezing. This is why the manual emphasizes pre-winter inspection. Allow adequate warm-up time before driving hard after cold parking, especially in extreme cold conditions.

Why Manual Speed Limits Exist

The 75 mph limit for snow tires and 30 mph limit for chains aren't arbitrary. They're based on the friction coefficient of the tire/chain on snow. Exceeding these limits dramatically increases stopping distance and reduces steering control beyond safe margins for the average driver.
