I'm now almost 2,000 miles & 3 months into ownership of my LC250. I still have my 5G 4Runner as well which was my previous vehicle purchase. So most of my comparisons will be aimed between the 2 platforms of vehicles.
1. The Engine: A 2.4L turbo vs a naturally aspirated V6. The newer engine is pleasant to drive. It gets up to speed quickly, makes very little noise, has no problem maintaining speed and rarely shifts gears that feel noticeable. My 5G 4Runner cries going or maintaining 70/80mph on the freeway but my LC250 will go 95mph and I'll never notice it until I look at the speedometer and realizer I need to slow down. It feels fast and responsive and it also sounds nice (insert turbo noises), I can only imagine how much better it will sound with an exhaust, cold air intake + snorkel. The engine while powerful leaves many skeptical about reliability. While I can agree I do worry more about what might go wrong first on the 2.4L compared to the bulletproof V6 it did not deter me from buying one. That's what a warranty is for.
2. MPG/Tank Size & Range: The 5G 4Runner wins this one. With the Land Cruiser 250 having an 18 gallon tank vs the 5G having a 23 gallon tank. By the time you modify both of these vehicles they will get similar MPG with the LC doing better occasionally (estimated 2-3mpg difference). You will surely be stopping for gas more often with the Land Cruiser still. And as far as I'm aware there is still no aftermarket auxiliary tank like there is for the 4Runner.
3. Tech/Features: Obviously the Land Cruiser wins this one. Everything is better hands down. Although the price difference can be argued if that's worth it for you or not. The most noticeable tech that I've enjoyed is the hands free driving improvements and microphone as well as road noise. I can never take a phone call in my 4Runner without having to repeat myself. Whereas taking work calls in the LC the quality is so good nobody know's I'm driving.
4. Offroad Focused Features: LC is standard with AWD/4WD and a rear locker. And man has it impressed me. Yes you can pick up an older TRD ORP with the same for less. But there's just something about this vehicle that performs incredibly well offroad. It also can fit larger tires easier which is a huge plus. As it reduces the stress of hammering and cutting wheel wells or buying extra parts such as BMC/BMR to fit 35's like my 4Runner.
Overall. I'm loving the Land Cruiser. It's nice having 2 vehicles that will be for different purposes and outshine each other in various areas. If I had to go back in time I would still buy the 4Runner. But if someone were to come to me today saying they want to buy a brand newToyota vehicle for the first time to offroad/overland I think I would push them towards the newer 2.4L Turbo platform.
For those that have switched or own both. What are your impressions? If you had to pick one which would you choose?
