Well apparently when they say Long Travel ain't cheap they meant it. Back in June I was raid tripped my LC250 to Oregon (15 hours from my home in Utah). We had made it to the coast and pulled out of a grocery store. As I sped up (From 15-25mph max) I heard a pop, lost gears and went into panic mode. I pulled over into the nearest parking lot 60 feet away, opened my car door and saw my worst nightmare. Oil leaking out everywhere. The pressure from the pop also forced my CV axle (driver side) out of place. Hence the reason for no gears and having to coast in neutral to the dollar general parking lot.

I towed the LC250 to the nearest Toyota dealer in Coos Bay Oregon and got a hotel for the night. The following day they inspected the car and found the issue. The differential has been rubbing against my upper oil pan. Slowly chipping away and eventually giving out. To create a penny size hole in the pan allowing the oil to leak out very quickly. Luckily I shut the car off ASAP and the hole was high enough there was still 3-4 of the 7qts of oil. So enough lubricant to prevent the motor from throwing a rod.

I do have Long Travel so as soon as the dealer saw that they denied any chance of a warranty claim. Which I understood at first. They handed me a $7,000+ repair bill to pull the motor and replace the pan then reinstall the motor.

Luckily Wicked Creations (the company who makes my LT came to the rescue) they paid a tow truck to drive it to them in SoCal to inspect it further. Where they found something rather alarming. When inspecting the diff they added upward pressure and found it made contact with the oil pan. (That's from 1 guy pushing upwards, so roughly 300lbs of force?) so obviously the way I use the car it's going to make contact.
But that's not a me issue. That's a Toyota issue. With a weak ass differential mount. I'm surprised nobody else has run into this issue.
The oil pan has now been fixed. ButI want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
So I ordered a differential drop from ICON. Which may give it a little extra spacing to prevent contact again. And Wicked Creations is working on making a stronger differential mount. Which will be an upgrade I will recommend heavily if the mounts are really the issue.
Unfortunately Toyota corporate will never address this or take responsibility. Probably not even look into it. Unless many more have the same issue.
I wouldn't wish this one anyone so hopefully you can learn from me. Get an Icon diff drop, don't thrash your LC250 or jump it hard, and keep an eye out for upgraded diff mounts. (I would guess the 6G 4Runner & 4G Taco use the same mounts).
If you have questions let me know! I have my thread notifications on or you can DM me on instagram @Kai__Larsen
